LA SCALA THEATRE IN MILAN

Its history, acoustics and the outstanding level of its performances have made La Scala Theatre in Milan one of the best known temples of lyric and classical music in the world. The 7 December inauguration is one of the most awaited cultural and social events in the year and gathers the most prominent personalities from the fields of culture, politics, industry worldwide not to mention the most popular TV and cinema stars. La Scala Theatre in Milan is home to the best opera singers and conductors such as Muti, Pavarotti, Carrera, Domingo, just to mention some.
The Teatro alla Scala was founded, under the auspices of the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, to replace the Royal Ducal Theatre, which was destroyed by fire on 26 February 1776 and had until then been the home of opera in Milan. In 1997 La Scala was converted into a Foundation under private ownership, thus opening a decisive phase of modernization. At the end of the season 2001, La Scala, which was designed by Piermarini, underwent a major conservation work, which included a complete overhaul of the technical layout of the stage. During the restoration, the artistic activity took place in the Teatro degli Arcimboldi, the newly constructed theatre located in the abandoned Pirelli-Bicocca industrial plant. Last chapter of the Teatro alla Scala story, its return to the renovated Piermarini building. On 7 December 2004 the first season after the definitive closing of the Theatre at the end of 2001 opened with the opera that 266 years ago inaugurated the Theatre: Europa Riconosciuta by Antonio Salieri, conducted by Riccardo Muti. Besides the restoration to preserve the monumental area carried out by architect Elisabetta Fabbri, and the modernization of the service mechanical plants, the most evident aspect of the renovated Teatro alla Scala is the majestic ellipsis and the new stage tower, both designed by architect Mario Botta.
How to get there by underground: MM line 1 stop Duomo; MM line 3 stops Montenapoleone and Duomo .

SCALA MUSEUM IN MILAN

The Museum of La Scala Theatre was founded in 1913 and is located on the first floor of the palace where the Theatre is housed. The Museum consists of 14 exhibiting rooms which illustrate the history of lyric music in general and of La Scala Theatre in particular. The collections include original scores, sets, costumes and ancient musical instruments. There are also sections dedicated to iconographical documentation and curiosities where the history and the origin of the theatre may be discovered. A single section is devoted to the great composer Giuseppe Verdi. The collections are enriched by marble busts, portraits of musicians and famous opera singers such as the myth of Maria Callas. If rehearsals are not taking place, visitors may sometimes look from the boxes down the splendid concert hall. The Teatro alla Scala Museum, besides being a meeting place for the large public, remains a place of study and research for searchers and opera lovers as well as a place where new generations can approach music through the activity of educational laboratories. The museum goes through the history of the Theatre over the years, through a large collection of portraits, mementos, busts, documents, playbills: a tribute to great musicians, from Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini to Arturo Toscanini and Victor de Sabata. While visiting the Museum, it is possible to admire the Theatre auditorium reopened after the restoration works. The exhibition path is also enriched with temporary exhibitions related to the program of the Teatro alla Scala performances, an opportunity dedicated to those who wish to feed their passion for the Teatro alla Scala.
