CLASSICAL MUSIC IN MILAN
LA SCALA PHILARMONIC ORCHESTRA IN MILAN
Milan boasts a solid musical tradition whose roots go back to the
beginning of the 19th century, when Italian opera experienced maximum
splendor and good fortune. All the most famous composers have trod the
boards of LA SCALA THEATRE stage,
www.teatroallascala.org, and no-one has
managed to escape judgment by the demanding Milanese audience. ROSSINI,
DONIZETTI, BELLINI, VERDI and PUCCINI are the names of only the most
important Italian composers who came to Milan to present the premičre of
their operas. The fortune of these composers and the Milanese theatre is
also to be sought in the foundation of CASA RICORDI (1808), which
acquired ownership of the complete musical archives of La Scala, thus
assuming a role of prime importance in the world of theatrical
impresarios, and indissolubly tying its name to the great season of
Italian opera. |

Nowadays La Scala is the most famous theatre in the world for its season
of opera, concerts and ballet, which has always boasted the names of the
most prestigious conductors. Every year its calendar presents the main
masterpieces of Italian and international tradition giving the ever
demanding audience performances by the most famous orchestras, besides
impeccable acoustics.
CASA RICORDI IN MILAN
When one speaks of classical music in Italy, there's a good chance one
will speak of Casa Ricordi as well.
With almost two hundred years of history behind it, Casa Ricordi is the
oldest Italian music publishing firm still in business. It is the leader
in the Italian market and unquestionably the world's most important
publisher of opera. As well as promoting and exploiting its existing
legacy - an immense catalogue built up over two centuries - Casa Ricordi
continues to develop a catalogue of the "classical" music by today's
leading contemporary Italian composers. Particular attention is also
devoted to forms of music theatre other than the canonical forms of
"serious" music: the musical, incidental music and mixed genres.
The Ricordi Historical Archive is one of the most important private
music collections in the world. The archive was built up as Casa Ricordi
steadily established its reputation (also preserved are the documents
recording the firm's foundation in 1808). Its content, assembled over a
period of almost two centuries, stands as a record of the history of
Italian music and opera as it is celebrated throughout the world. The
archive's chief "treasures" are the autograph scores of the most famous
musicians of the 19th and 20th centuries, the accumulated correspondence
between composers and publisher (some 15,000 letters) and a rich
collection of photographs. Also included is an abundant collection of
operatic materials, numbering over 10,000 items, including original
scenery- and costume-sketches. Among the giants of the past represented
in this rich musical legacy are Paganini, Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini,
Listz, Verdi, Puccini, to Nono and Donatoni.

MILAN AUDITORIUM
The Auditorium of Milano, the new "home" of the Orchestra Sinfonica di
Milano Giuseppe Verdi, was created by restoring the old Cinema Teatro
Massimo and will be indissolubly linked to the future activity of the
Orchestra.
A New Multipurpose Hall On The Navigli. The city of Milan has been
enhanced by a multipurpose hall conceived for music, in the Ticinese quarter, one of its most picturesque areas, just a few minutes away from
Piazza Duomo.
The structure dates back to 1939 and had lain idle for many years. It
was designed by the architect Alessandro Rimini who designed the
Colosseo cinema in 1927, the Impero in 1929 and the Astra in 1929.
The main hall now seats an audience of 1400. The extremely comfortable
chairs are distributed in the "spoon-shaped" stalls and the tiered
gallery which extends above and embraces the hall with its curvilinear
balustrade. The ceiling, which has been enhanced by the project, is
composed of the original network of bare reinforced concrete beams
arranged radius fashion towards the 20-metre wide acoustic shell-shaped
proscenium. A sophisticated air-conditioning system ensures that the
hall is kept at a perfect temperature in all seasons.
The hall has been designed bearing in mind the different purposes for
which it will be used: symphony concerts, choral and chamber music, jazz
and light music, recordings with digital sound techniques, as well as
for broadcasting performances via satellite TV and projecting musical
films.
